The characteristic white houses of
the old town are reached by narrow little streets and pretty
steps leading up the hill; these are often decorated with
archways, vaults and verandas. Ostuni is built on three hills,
and is famous throughout Europe for the dazzling effect of its
whitewashed houses. It is a matter of pride for everyone that
the city should be kept fresh, comfortable and above all,
white!
The main square in Ostuni is triangular, dominated by
the St. Orontius’s spire, 21 metres high. At the top
of the hill, there are several churches, as well as the Cathedral,
which houses the "Madonna with Child and Saints"
by Jacopo Palma.
Ostuni coast is about 20 Km long and it is composed by
several white beaches surrounded by a rich mediterranean
vegetation. The visitors can choose between a sandy or a rocky
beach, enjoying one of the most multi-coloured sea floor of
the area.
In Ostuni there are a lot of traditional and religious events,
such as San Biagio Feast, Barco’s Feast, Madonna della
Nova’s one and Madonna della Stella’s one. But the
richest period of the year is the Ostuni august during
which most of its artistic, cultural, sport and fair events
take place .
