Even
the violent sea storms or the splashing waves caressing the
last small boats left along the coast, assure intense feelings.
Gateway to paradise, on the promontory
stands Santa Maria di Leuca's minor pontificial Basilica de
Finibus Terrae, where once there was the temple dedicated to
the goddess Minerva.
Tradition tells that Saint Peter, coming from East and
on his way to Rome, landed at Leuca and began the
evangelization of Salento.
Seen from sea, the coast of Santa Maria di Leuca shows a
landscape of rare beauty.
Chiselled
from the action of the wind, the coast is full of cliffs sheer
to the sea, sea caves and hollows of unparalleled shapes and
colours which alternate to lonely, very white sandy beaches.
