Numerous are the jewels which make Lecce’s historical centre a beautiful place to
visit. Among them, we mention the Duomo (12th Century) completely restored in the second half of the 16th
Century, which represents the background of one of the most beautiful italian
squares, where there are the Seminary and the Episcopal
Palace and the beautiful Santa Croce Basilica with the enclosed
Celestini’s Monastery: a true triumph of putti,
volutes, vegetal and floreal motives finely enraved in the soft stone of Lecce.
The city conserves other
monuments, signs of a more ancient nobility: a messapico Ipogeo of the 3rd century b.C. in the underground of the garden of
Palmieri palace, a Roman Amphitheatre in public
Saint Oronzo square, rests of the Port of Adrian on the beautiful beach of Saint Cataldo, doors and palaces belonging to the 5th
century.
