The city, of
more than 30.000
inhabitants, boasts some striking views and a pleasant look. Its population is kind and hospitable; its streets and squares are clean and painstaking, just as wherever in Apulia. The air is fresh in summer and mild in winter, thanks to the curtain of the nearby hills and to the closeness of the Selva (Wood) and of the
sea.
In the surroudings of Fasano there are a lot of tourist resources: the
Selva of Fasano (the Fasano’s Wood), 7 Km far from the city, is a relevant place of the Trulli’s Valley.
Here, among pine, oak and live oak trees, the tourist, tired of the whirling city life, can breathe the healty air of the Selva and restore his/her lost energy. Moreover, he/she couldn’t get bored because, above all in the summer, in this city there are fashionable events, amusements, competitions, shows and folkloristic
feasts.
In few minutes from Fasano you can
get : Laureto, charming summer resort; Savelletri,
picturesque district of fishermen with its beautiful rocky coasts, nowadays enriched with luxurious hotels and a wonderful golf course;
Torre Canne, with its modern spa, first-class restaurants, fashionable places and the ruines of
Egnazia(Gnatia), very old city belonged firstly to the Messapians, secondly to the Greeks and finally to the Romans.
Another very attractive town is Monopoli, which was a small maritime power during the Byzantine age. All the palaces in the old town centre, which extends around the port, are symbols of a
rich merchant middle class. Very attractive is the Romanesque Santa Maria church
(12th century), built by Amalfi’s sailors to make a vow, and the Cathedral
(12th century), rearranged during the baroque age, where there are the Byzantine icon of Madonna della Madia, patron saint of Monopoli, and the paintings by Palma il Giovane and Francesco De Mura
(18th century).
