It raises in the middle of Itria
Valley (Trulli's Valley) and it is the most important expression of the Apulia rural landscape. Alberobello is famous
around the world for having these particular buildings: it was declared as national monument and then as world heritage by the
UNESCO. Trulli, limestone dwellings found in the southern region of Apulia, are remarkable examples of drywall (mortarless) construction, a prehistoric building technique still in use in this region.
The trulli are made of roughly worked limestone boulders collected from neighbouring fields. Characteristically, they feature pyramidal, domed or conical roofs built up of corbelled limestone slabs.
There are some important place to visit in Alberobello: Trullo
Sovrano, belonging to the 17th century, which is 15 metres high;
S. Antonio Church, a religious building in the shape of a trullo and
Trulli Siamesi (twin Trulli).
Near to Alberobello, other interesting
towns are:
LOCOROTONDO, with its characteristic circular historical
centre, located on a hill,
CISTERNINO and its old districts that remind to the past,
CONVERSANO, old and noble town whose princes left many signs of their power and good taste and
CASTELLANA, the town of the characteristique caves, in which there are many stalactitic and stalagmitic formes.
